Why Selection is Important
To their cost, many organisations are familiar with the financial consequences of making the wrong selection decision, sometimes described as the £1 million error. When recruitment, salary, and severance costs are tallied, and effects on share price, loss of morale and market opportunities are taken into account, the expense of making ill-considered senior appointments becomes painfully apparent.
Fairness and diversity issues are also increasingly on the agenda, coupled with an increasing tendency toward litigation. Employers must therefore be able to demonstrate their recruitment and selection methods are fair and unbiased. The Keil Centre has many years experience assisting companies to improve their selection performance by using fair, objective methods designed to predict success on the job. Unlike some of its competitors, The Keil Centre does not publish or retail its own selection materials. We are therefore able to provide unbiased, expert advice on the most appropriate methods available, chosen from the full range of potential providers.
For example, we implemented an assessment centre for a post pivotal to a large local authority's strategic plans: the IT Manager. We designed assessment exercises to assess key success factors in this job. Once their selection decision had been made, the interviewing panel commented that the successful candidate would probably not have been chosen using their previous, traditional recruitment methods. The successful candidate clearly shone amongst fellow candidates during the specially designed exercises. One year later the IT Manager has proven to be highly successful in this key role.
