The Keil Centre can offer organisations guidance on developing procedures and/or help to re-write existing procedures to incorporate human factors principles.
Our guidance is based on human factors best practice and research produced by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). All control of major accident hazard (COMAH) sites are required by the HSE to have a site standard or procedure for writing/designing procedures.
Guidance will include advice on:
- Procedure definition
- Procedure ownership
- When to use a procedure
- The procedure development process – from understanding the task to procedure review and update
- Procedure presentation and design
We can provide organisations with a sample procedure and evaluation checklist to assist with their programme of procedure development or re-write. We can also produce bespoke guidance for an organisation.
Who is it for?
This guidance is useful for anyone who is responsible for the production, management or approval of written procedures within an organisation. Emphasis is placed on operations, maintenance and emergency procedures, rather than corporate procedures.
Benefits of this approach
Procedures should be viewed only as part of the risk management system and should not be the sole defence against human error. However good procedures will:
- Improve their usability and reduce the potential for human error during operations
- Support the development of internal skills and knowledge and promote compliant, positive attitudes and behaviours.
