/ Effective teamwork / Enhance the performance
of existing teams
There are many reasons why existing teams need to change their established
ways of working. For example, new technology may change what's required
of team members, or increased commercial competition may lead to renewed
focus on team performance and productivity. Whatever the reason, established
teams can benefit from revisiting the fundamentals of effective teamwork,
and adapting their approach to fit changed circumstances. An example
of such a project was:-
- An oil tanker loading facility was due to commission a new,
complex piece of production plant. Manning the new plant and existing
equipment demanded increased role flexibility from team members.
Additionally, it was imperative to contain and reduce operating
costs and improve health and safety performance to retain continued
support from senior managers and external customers. The Keil
Centre's team of Chartered Psychologists first diagnosed the existing
organisational environment, and provided team development options
which would meet organisational priorities. An internal team development
co-ordinator was appointed, and coached and developed by our staff.
Thereafter a series of team development workshops were jointly
delivered for team leaders and team members, which focused on
performance improvement, innovation and managing health and safety.
The workshops helped traditional supervisors make the transition
to team leaders, tackled unresolved team performance issues, and
led to many examples of innovation and cost reduction.
