Home / Right people, right job / Competencies - why are they important in selection?

Competencies are sets of behaviours which epitomise superior performance in a role. The Keil Centre has worked with over 30 organisations to design and implement competency frameworks to underpin selection and development of people.

The Keil Centre's approach to designing competency frameworks
  • We ensure competencies reflect superior performance so that selecting and developing people against them makes a difference
  • We design a robust framework, use multiple techniques and including key stakeholders
  • We start with the end in mind - think about application and validity throughout, so momentum is not lost.
Once key competencies have been identified, the most valid and reliable methods are chosen to select the "best fit" candidate. The methods we would typically recommend are:

Assessment centres Structured interviews Psychometric assessments
