Phil is a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Prior to joining The Keil Centre in 2005 as a Human Factors
Advisor, he enjoyed a career spanning 28 years with BP in
various operational and HSE management roles. Over the past
ten years he has developed his knowledge of the practical
application of human factors tools and techniques to deliver
performance through people. In 2003 he was appointed BP's
first specialist human factors advisor at their Grangemouth
site. This role involved leading the site's Human Factors
development, and supporting various aspects of the BP Group's
human factors effort. Phil was the invited chairman of an
American Institute of Chemical Engineers sub-committee tasked
with writing a Human Factors in the Process Industry text
book targeted at engineers, which was published in 2007.
Phil's current and recent projects include ·
- Developing, trialling and implementing a set of human
factors analytical tools and techniques for use in incident
investigation, to analyse and influence errors, violations
and develop safety culture
- Coaching at all levels, particularly to develop effective
leadership behaviours which in turn influence the behaviour
of others and the organisation's culture
- Developing and delivering short awareness courses on human
factors in health and safety, for managers, engineers, supervisors
and safety representatives
- Management of change; including plant, procedures and
organisation with specific emphasis on the inclusion of
human factors considerations
- Invited as an independent Operational and HSE expert to
visit production sites and observe practices, conditions
and behaviours, advising on their strengths and on opportunities
for improvement.
