What can psychology do for business?
Applying psychology in business gives you the understanding of individuals, teams and organisations that will help improve people’s wellbeing and performance at work. This has just been confirmed in recent UK research conducted by psychologists at the University of Sheffield. Future commercial performance was predicted by staff’s perceptions of the company’s concern for their welfare, supervisory support, skill development and performance feedback. Psychology can help you achieve performance through people.

The Keil Centre: Past, Present & Future

Dr Ian Tierney, Chartered Clinical Psychologist and founder of The Keil Centre, retired recently. Here he reflects on The Keil Centre’s past, present and future.

Why was The Keil Centre set up?
To provide an independent centre of excellence in applied psychology, initially clinical psychology, and then later occupational/business psychology. At the time there was no independent centre of this kind in Scotland.

What has The Keil Centre contributed to psychology and business?
To show that solutions based on sound, peer-reviewed evidence from international applied psychology research can be delivered outwith the health service or academic institutions. The Keil Centre provides practical, innovative, award winning solutions to individual
and corporate problems.

What do you see as the reasons for The Keil Centre's success?
I know that our success has been due to recruiting excellent psychologists who are knowledgeable and confident in their various
specialities. Modesty forbids that I (as the one that did much of the initial choosing) should claim credit for this…

What do you see as The Keil Centre's future?
I await the future of The Keil Centre with interest. There is an increasing appreciation of the real benefits that professional applied
psychology can bring to many aspects of life, be it business, health, personal wellbeing or sport. Increasingly clients appreciate that our approaches really change the situation for the better. Using my crystal-ball I guess that the rest of Europe as a market for this type of applied psychology has hardly started to develop, so maybe a Keil Centre in Barcelona or Florence?
